Samba
Syncopated and smooth, this dance music was invented in the late 1800's as part of Brazil's Carnaval celebrations. Carnaval sambas were typically performed by large percussion ensembles, and are an expression of Brazil's West African heritage. Later, in the 1920's and 1930's samba became increasingly complex blending African rhythms with European melodies.
