Chair and founder of the Multimedia Studies Program - College of Marin, CA where he teaches courses in multimedia production, web development and authoring.

James also runs a multimedia production and consulting business which provides interactive multimedia training, programming, production, and design services to corporate and government clients. Past clients include: Autodesk Corporation, the Environmental Protection Agency, The National Foundation for the Improvement of Education and the Marin County Office of Education.

His various projects and students have received numerous significant national, state, and local awards including a 1995 Invision Award, the most prestigious award in the multimedia industry. In 1994 James received a Special Congressional Award for Excellence in Education for his work in creating student-centered, technology-based learning environments. In 1998 he received another New Media Invision Award, this one for his work at the College of Marin.
